Disclaimer
Please read this before using Coteau. Last updated Oct 21, 2026.
1. Summary
Independent research, models, opinions and convictions. Not investment advice. Coteau is not a registered investment adviser or broker-dealer, does not invest or manage money, and does not sell investment advice. Not responsible for any loss of capital.
2. No investment, tax, legal or accounting advice
Nothing on this site or in the app is investment, financial, tax, legal or accounting advice. Nothing here is personalized; it does not consider your finances, goals or risk tolerance. Do your own research and consider speaking with a licensed financial professional before investing.
3. No adviser–client relationship or offer
Using Coteau does not create an adviser–client or any other professional relationship, and Coteau owes you no fiduciary duty. Nothing here is an offer or solicitation to buy or sell any security, and nothing here is a recommendation to buy, sell or hold any security.
4. Model portfolios and research
Rules-based models follow their signals. Hand-built portfolios like the Long Book are edited by the author, and every change is logged as a dated rebalance.
Our models can be wrong. Holdings and ideas may be highly aggressive, speculative, out of date, or wrong at times. Scores, grades, scanner results and timing signals are descriptive research signals about price, volume or fundamentals. They are not instructions to buy or sell. Model portfolios are research, not accounts, and results are hypothetical unless marked Live. Even Live results are hypothetical portfolios measured from published holdings and daily closing prices, not real trading.
5. Hypothetical and backtested performance
Backtested and hypothetical results are built with hindsight and do not reflect actual trading, fees, taxes or slippage beyond a simple cost estimate. They can suffer from survivorship bias (companies that were acquired or delisted may be missing) and look-ahead risk (data that was not available at the time). Models change over time, and some are retired; retired models are listed on the Retired models page so the record stays complete. Past performance, simulated or live, does not guarantee future results.
6. Risks
All investing involves risk, including loss of principal and the possible total loss of an investment. Risks include volatility; concentration in a few holdings, one sector or one theme (for example AI); small and mid-sized companies; biotech and clinical-trial outcomes, which can move a stock sharply in either direction; low liquidity; foreign companies and ADRs; and, if they are ever discussed, leverage, options and short selling, which can lose more than the amount invested.
7. Losses, liability and warranties
Coteau is not responsible for any losses, including loss of capital, from use of this information. To the fullest extent the law allows, Coteau and the author are not liable for any direct, indirect or consequential loss arising from use of the site, the app or its content. Everything is provided "as is" and "as available", without warranties of any kind, including accuracy, completeness, timeliness or fitness for a particular purpose.
8. Data and sources
Prices and company data come from Yahoo Finance and are at least 15 minutes delayed on the public site. Fund holdings come from SEC EDGAR 13F filings, which are filed up to 45 days after quarter-end, show long U.S. positions only and may be stale. Congressional trades come from U.S. House periodic transaction reports, which can be filed up to 45 days after a trade and show amounts only as ranges. News headlines come from third-party publishers. Data may be delayed, incomplete or inaccurate and is provided as is, without warranty. Check important figures against the original source. Company names and logos are trademarks of their owners and are used for identification only.
9. No affiliation
Coteau is independent and is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by the SEC, the U.S. House of Representatives, any fund, company, or person shown, or any data provider (including Yahoo Finance and Alpaca). Portfolios on the Social Portfolio Overlap page are public, self-reported portfolios only; being listed is not an endorsement by or of anyone, and no one listed is affiliated with Coteau.
10. Conflicts of interest
The author may hold positions in securities discussed, including the holdings of the models and portfolios shown, and may buy or sell them at any time, including before or after publication, without notice.
11. AI and automation
Coteau uses automated tools to gather, sort and organize public information (for example ranking and tagging news, building data tables and running the models), and may use AI tools to help draft research notes and summaries. Automated and AI output can be wrong or incomplete. Verify anything important independently.
12. Third-party links and content
Links to other sites, filings, posts and articles are provided for convenience. Coteau does not control or endorse third-party content and is not responsible for it.
13. Alerts and notifications
Alerts, emails and push notifications are informational. They may be delayed, incomplete or fail to arrive. They are not timed trade signals, and you should never rely on them for trading decisions.
14. Beta software
Coteau is in beta. Features may change, break or be removed, and data may be reset.
15. Owner and tester access
Some features are available only to the author and invited testers for development and testing under the data providers' terms. They are not offered to the public.
16. Forward-looking statements
Any statement about the future, including expectations for companies, markets or models, is an opinion that may turn out to be wrong. Actual results can differ materially.
17. Availability
There is no guarantee that the site, the app or any data will be available at any particular time or at all.
18. Changes to this disclaimer
This disclaimer may be updated at any time. The date at the top shows the latest version. Continued use means you accept the current version.
19. Planning tools and calculators
The Planning tools at /tools/planning (including the portfolio analyzer, growth, retirement, coverage, debt payoff and the other calculators listed there) are general educational illustrations. They are not financial planning, investment, retirement, tax, insurance, legal, credit, real-estate or benefits advice, and they are not personalized to you. Coteau is not a registered investment adviser, broker-dealer, financial planner, tax professional or insurance agent, and using these tools does not create any professional relationship.
Hypothetical results only. Every figure, chart, percentage, date and amount is a hypothetical estimate produced from the numbers you enter and from simplified assumptions (constant or randomly drawn returns, inflation, fees, tax rates and timing). The estimates may be completely wrong. Real results will differ, sometimes by a lot. Nothing shown is a prediction, a projection of your actual results, a guarantee or a promise, and nothing is a recommendation to save, spend, borrow, repay, invest, buy, sell, hold, claim a benefit, buy coverage or take any other action.
Simulations and history. Simulated ("Monte Carlo") paths are random draws from a simple statistical model with a fixed seed; the share of paths that last is a property of that model, not a probability for you. Historical paths replay past S&P 500 total returns and inflation (Robert Shiller's monthly data and Aswath Damodaran's annual data, both credited on each tool). Past returns, sequences and averages don't predict future results, and the future can be better or worse than anything in the record. Index returns aren't investable and ignore fees, trading costs and taxes unless you enter them.
Specific tools. The portfolio analyzer describes a mix you enter using delayed public price history; its backtest is hypothetical, rebalanced monthly, ignores dividends, costs and taxes, and its observations are descriptive, not judgments about suitability. The coverage estimate is an arithmetic present-value illustration only; Coteau doesn't name, sell, recommend or link to insurance or any other product; please talk to a licensed professional. Social Security comparisons use simplified published adjustment rules that can change; your benefit can be confirmed only with the Social Security Administration (SSA.gov). Life-expectancy figures come from the SSA period life table and describe population averages, not you. Tax figures use only the flat rate you enter and are not tax calculations.
No reliance. Don't rely on these tools to make financial decisions. Check every number yourself and consult a qualified, licensed professional who knows your full situation before acting.
Limitation of liability. The tools are provided "as is" and "as available", without warranties of any kind, including accuracy, completeness or fitness for a particular purpose. To the fullest extent the law allows, Coteau and the author are not liable for any loss or damage, direct, indirect or consequential, arising from use of or reliance on the tools or their output. Section 7 also applies.
Your inputs. The numbers you type into the personal calculators are computed in your browser and are not sent to or stored on Coteau's servers. The analyzer sends only tickers and percentage weights to compute price statistics, and they are not stored. If you choose to save a scenario it is kept only in your browser's local storage, and you can delete it with "Clear saved". A share link contains your numbers in the part after the #, so anyone with the link can see them. See the Privacy notice.
