Market events: CPI, the Fed, jobs and earnings

Scheduled releases that often move prices, and why

Economic releases

The consumer price index (CPI, inflation), the jobs report, GDP and PCE are published on fixed schedules by the BLS and BEA, usually at 8:30 AM ET. Prices often move quickly right after, as the numbers are compared to expectations.

The Fed

The Federal Reserve's rate decisions come at 2:00 PM ET on scheduled meeting days. Rate changes affect borrowing costs, which feed into how stocks and bonds are priced.

Earnings

Companies report results four times a year. Reported numbers, guidance and the conference call can move a single stock far more than a typical day.
