Sources and tax years
Estimate only, not tax advice. Rules shown are for 2026 unless a line says otherwise.
- Federal income tax withholding: IRS Publication 15-T (2026), Worksheet 1A and the 2026 annual percentage method tables (standard and Step 2 checkbox); Form W-4 (2026) Step 3 amounts of $2,200 per qualifying child and $500 per other dependent.
- Social Security: SSA contribution and benefit base for 2026, $184,500 (ssa.gov/oact/cola/cbb.html). Medicare: 1.45%, plus 0.9% Additional Medicare Tax withheld on wages over $200,000 (IRS).
- 401(k) limit 2026: $24,500 (IRS IR-2025-111, Notice 2025-67). HSA limits 2026: $4,400 / $8,750 (Rev. Proc. 2025-19).
- State income tax: Tax Foundation, 2026 State Income Tax Rates and Brackets (as of January 1, 2026), compiled from state statutes, forms and instructions. Where the Tax Foundation shows 2025 figures, the page labels that state's year: bracket widths for AR, ID, MA, ND and VT, and VT deduction and exemption amounts; ME and UT dependent amounts.
- California: Franchise Tax Board 2026 indexed brackets, standard deduction ($5,900 / $11,800) and exemption credits ($158 / $316; $491 per dependent), plus the 1% Behavioral Health Services Tax over $1 million; CA SDI 1.3% with no wage cap (EDD, 2026). FTB publishes full 2026 withholding tables in late December, so CA figures may change slightly.
- New York: NYS-50-T-NYS (1/26) brackets; paid family leave 0.432% up to $411.91 a year (NY DFS, 2026); disability benefits up to $0.60 a week. NYC and Yonkers taxes aren't included; use the local rate field.
- Not verified against every state's own withholding tables; each state's year is labeled on the result. Estimate only, not tax advice.

Assumptions and limitations
- Estimate only, not tax advice. Federal income tax withholding follows the IRS Pub 15-T (2026) percentage method for Forms W-4 from 2020 or later; it's withholding, not the tax owed for the year.
- Social Security is 6.2% of wages up to the 2026 wage base of $184,500; Medicare is 1.45% plus 0.9% withheld on wages over $200,000. Both are worked out on a yearly basis and spread evenly across paychecks (no year-to-date tracking).
- State tax is a simplified yearly calculation (brackets, standard deduction and personal exemptions or credits) divided by the number of paychecks, not each state's own withholding tables. Not modeled: local taxes beyond the single rate you enter, most state payroll programs other than CA SDI and NY PFL/DBL, recapture and benefit phase-outs in some states, and head-of-household brackets in states that have them (single brackets are used, except CA).
- 401(k) contributions are capped at the 2026 limit of $24,500 a year; Pennsylvania taxes 401(k) contributions and California and New Jersey tax HSA contributions at the state level. Health premiums and HSA payroll contributions are treated as Section 125 (before Social Security and Medicare).
- Every number is hypothetical and depends entirely on what you enter. Small changes in assumptions can change results a lot.
- Returns are smooth and constant in the single-number projection; real returns vary every year, and real markets can do better or worse than anything shown.
- Inflation is a single constant rate you choose (except in historical replays, which use the actual CPI of each year).
- Growth compounds monthly (or at the contribution frequency) and contributions are made at the end of each period.
- No taxes unless you turn on the simplified tax drag (all positive growth taxed each year at your rate, which overstates tax for buy-and-hold). No fees unless you set one.
