How it works
What it owns
The 15 S&P 500 companies whose share price rose the most from 12 months ago to 1 month ago. Each gets 1/15 (about 6.7%).
Why skip the last month
Very recent winners tend to give back a little in the short run, so the signal ignores the latest month. This is the standard academic '12-1' momentum definition.
When it trades
On the last trading day of each month it re-ranks all S&P 500 stocks and swaps names that fell out of the top 15.
What can go wrong
Momentum crashes in sharp market reversals (for example, early 2009). 15 names concentrated in whatever is hot can mean big sector bets. Turnover is about 30% a month.

Why 15 names?
Same rules, different portfolio size (10 bps costs). Fewer names won more in this sample, but the most concentrated result is also the least reliable: a handful of picks can swing it. 15 is a compromise between concentration and diversification.

Methodology: earlier, looser backtest
Until Oct 19, 2026 this page showed a backtest that used today's index members for the whole history, so it could "buy" stocks before they joined the index (often right after their biggest run-ups). That version returned +30.7% a year in-sample, +62.9% out-of-sample and +45.1% over the full period (max drawdown -27.7%). The figures above replace it.
Read this before trusting the numbers. Backtest only counts stocks after they joined the S&P 500. Membership is point-in-time: a stock is eligible only while it was actually in the index on the rebalance date (it can't be picked before it joined, or after it was removed). Former members that still trade are included; companies that were acquired or delisted have no price data and are still missing, so some survivorship bias remains. Rebalanced at each month-end close; signals use only data available at that close. Costs: 10 bps per side on every dollar traded; no taxes or slippage beyond that; cash earns 0%. Past results are not a forecast.
